Update 01/09/14: There are a few points I would add now having owned this box for a while:ġ) The standout feature is the excellent and fast universal search which allows you to search the OnDemand content as well as the EPG for the programme you are looking for.

If you are in the market for a PVR to record TV, watch the free to air HD channels, and stream the free Catchup services then you won't go too far wrong with this box. I understand that the first generation YouView boxes were a little sluggish, but this one is fast and works well. Obviously buying this box as a standalone item you don't get the BT channels but it otherwise works fine via other broadband connections which can be cheaper. It seems that the BBC and others are reducing their involvement in the platform although it seems a fairly safe bet with so many BT and TalkTalk subscribers. As BT and TalkTalk are major share holders in YouView I wonder whether other apps will arrive. Otherwise there is NowTV from Sky but no Netflix, Amazon, or other streaming services.

There are the usual players such as iPlayer and Demand5 as well as the milkshake! app for kids programmes from channel 5 such as Peppa Pig, plus a Dave player.

Apps are the only place where the system is a little weak. This almost makes the guide and the various catchup apps redundant. Even better, simply pressing the search button and starting to type a programme name brings it up to stream if available. The YouView guide is great - you can rapidly skip though the channels to pick what you want to watch and review the past week where clicking on the programme name plays it back via the appropriate catchup player such as iPlayer or More4.

The unit is small, discrete, and quiet with a well designed and quality-feeling remote, that can be programmed to also turn the TV on and off and control volume and AV inputs. I was attracted to the YouView platform for its reported ease of use, and in this device it delivers. We own two old Humax PVRs which we have been very pleased with, but for streaming have relied on an Apple TV which whilst excellent lacks easy access to iPlayer and other catchup services. All in all with hindsight I would NOT recommend this recorder at the price it was a costly mistake. I get an error message saying go to this site !! when you get there it just says turn it off and turn it on again (Yes that is true) to re-set the recorder.ĮVERY SINGLE TIME is too much, I wish I had gone for the Humax branded one, although the BT reviews were better than Humax reviews.īought November 2014 it is now December 2017, and it is increasingly giving faults 1/ the main one being the signal to or from the remote, even with brand new batteries in it, it can take a dozen presses of the remote in all directions before it reacts to the signal (There is absolutely nothing in the field of vision to block the signal 2/ it had for the last 6 months been ending the recordings a couple of minutes before the end of the program (The internal clock is correct and is set automatically).

Branded and as such any software updates and web content has to go through B.T.ĮVERY time I want to use web content, Catch Up etc. This replaced my old recorder that had started missing recordings, was no problem setting up, could do with better on-line content like Utube, To learn more about how and for what purposes Amazon uses personal information (such as Amazon Store order history), please visit our Privacy Notice.
